Our instructors will break down the elements of the roll into individual skills and troubleshoot your performance so that your roll becomes automatic. Aside from the tremendous sense of accomplishment you’ll get from learning to roll, you’ll find that skills like bracing and edging your kayak will improve as well. This one technique can provide the confidence you need to push all your skills to the next level!

Tidal Current Clinic

In a coastal environment, the water is always moving. In this clinic, we will introduce strategies for trip planning, as well as technique for moving your boat through current rich environments. Expect to spend a few minutes on land discussing how tide and currents are related, and then get right on the water for eddy hopping, attaining, ferry angles, and rescue strategies.

Rocks And Surf Clinic

Sometimes you have to land in a hurry. This class is designed to give paddlers the tools to land in rocks and surf, navigate challenging slots, and have a little fun along the way. Expect to catch a few waves, work on timing and technique, and navigate rock features. Bring your helmet!

How to Register

Coastal Navigation

With a sound understanding of navigational theory, let’s put it to some use! We will briefly work on a trip plan, discuss local wind, swell, and tide, then get right on the water. Concepts discussed will likely include set, drift, ferry angles, ranges, and vectors. Bring your compasses, as we will also work on some tactics for fog.

Join Carl Ladd, ACA Level 5 Advanced Open Water Instructor, ACA L4 Open Water Instructor Trainer and John Carmody UKCC Level 4 Performance Coach, British Canoeing Coaching Diploma, BCU Level 5 Sea Coach, BCU 5Star Sea Provider, BCU Open Water, Navigation Provider, ACA Level 5 Advanced Open Water Instructor for a weekend of fun, coastal kayak skills, seamanship & navigation training along the south coast of Massachusetts & Rhode Island. We plan to make use of whatever conditions the ocean provides us: surf, current play, rock gardening and more! Our goals are to increase your situational awareness while we improve your technique & performance in dynamic environments. This training is a student-centered experience, so participants should arrive with plenty of questions and skills they are hoping to learn or refine in addition to their sense of adventure and play. Participants should be British Canoe 3-Star or ACA Level 3 paddlers or higher and be prepared to spend two full and active days on the water.
